Crude Prices Fall to 4-Month Low as Production Hits 24-Year High

Crude oil price is hovering dangerously over its four-month low price as futures rose 1 mere cent above the lowest close since June. With investors speculating that U.S. stockpiles have increased for a seven consecutive week, outlook does not appear to be improving for West Texas Intermediate, which has vacillated between gains and losses four the last four months.

With the U.S. economy, and the global one by consequence, on the rocks last month over the partial government shutdown and the Fed’s meeting tapering or extension of quantitative easing pumped into the nation’s economy, investors look forward to tomorrow’s release of supply data by the Energy Information Administration to assess demand levels in the world’s biggest consumer of oil.

Last week’s production reached a 24-year high while crude stockpiles expanded by 2.2 million barrels to 386.1 million. WTI for December delivery was at $94.50 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, down 12 cents, at 4:26 p.m. Singapore time. It closed at $94.61 on Nov. 1, the lowest since June 21. The volume of all futures traded was about 48 percent below the 100-day average.

Concerns that the U.S. government’s 16-day shutdown put a drag on economic growth and hampered oil demand has been keeping traders on their toes as they await the release of other key economic data later in the week that might shed more light on the Fed’s true stance towards its $85 million bond-buying programme after officials said they would proceed with the curtailing of the stimulus upon receiving more indicators of strengthened economy.

Third-quarter’s preliminary economic growth to be released on Thursday and the highly anticipated Non-Farm Payrolls report scheduled for Friday (delayed 7 days due to last month’s halt in government operations) will play an important role not only on investor sentiment, but also on the Fed’s decision regarding economic stimulus at its next meeting in December.

Euro Stoxx 600 Trims Four-Week Gain

European stocks declines halting the four-week gain of the Stoxx Europe 600 Index, due to investors’ expectation that U.S. manufacturing growth slowed.

The Stoxx 600 fell 0.2 percent to 321.7 at 10:54 a.m. in London. The gauge has gained 0.5 percent this week, as it closed at its highest level yesterday level since May 2008, as the Federal Reserve refrained from curbing stimulus measures and as companies from BNP Paribas SA to Volkswagen AG reported better-than-forecast profit.

The release of the Supply Management’s manufacturing index recorded a decrease yesterday to 55 for last month from September’s 56.2, which was the strongest since April 2011. Investors eagerly awake data next week to gauge the health of the U.S. economy following the announcement of the Federal Reserve this more evidence of sustained growth is needed before restricting the amount of its monthly bond purchasing.

Fed Meeting to Boost or Burst the Dollar?

The U.S. dollar has reached a one-week high against many major currencies ahead of the Fed’s official decision regarding the economic stimulus as investors seem to be abandoning their bearish tendencies towards the currency.

Following the the 16-day government shutdown earlier this month that resulted in a decision to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and the anticipated decision that the Fed would therefore extend its quantitative easing programme into at least the first quarter of next year, investors eagerly sold their greenbacks pushing the currency’s value into a deep low.

Although the dollar weakened after every single Fed meeting this year, with the exception of June’s meetings, the market seemed more positive toward the dollar this week. With investors having already reacted to the anticipated continuation of the economic stimulus, no further surprises are expected from this 29-30 October Fed meeting, the result of which will be announced at 6 p.m. GMT today.

Only last Friday the dollar had plunged to a nine-month low with its index recording 78.998, but on Wednesday it shot up to 79.692, its highest point since 22nd October. Yesterday the currency closed at 79.648, recording a 0.1 percent rise from its previous position.

Some analysts, moreover, believe that the rise the dollar experienced the last few days has been driven by investors closing short positions they had opened earlier this month, rather than a real change of sentiment in the market.
