5 Inexpensive Summer Activities

Going out during the summer shouldn’t burn a hole in your pocket. Here are our suggestions to some fun and cost-effective hang-outs.

Day at the Beach

Sun, sand and water – all free of charge! A day at the beach is the ultimate summer activity and it’s up to you to decide if you want it to be relaxed or action-filled. You can lounge in sun, collect seashells, build sand castles, play volleyball or just have a relaxing sunset picnic. The scenery is there for the taking – the choice of adrenaline level is yours. Pack a blanket, plenty of water and don’t forget sunscreen!

Outdoor Exercise

While many of us might perceive exercise as a chore or a hassle, if you’re looking for a fun time that will also make you work up a sweat, find a type of exercise that speaks to your heart, and enjoy a spontaneous outdoor workout! Rollerblading is a fast and fun way to explore your surroundings, while a game of basketball or tennis will get your competitive juices flowing. Feel like something less intense? Grab (or rent) some wheels and go on a bicycle ride. It’s a great activity to do as a group or on a romantic date and the pace and level of challenge is totally up to you.

Explore the Park

Even if you walk through the park every day on your way to work, you wouldn’t believe how many fun (and cheap) possibilities it offers for outdoor activities. You can hit the playground (because swings aren’t just for kids), throw a Frisbee around or fly a kite. For a more romantic type of occasion you can take a stroll, a leisurely boat ride and pack a picnic for delicious finale to a relaxing day.

Hiking

Take a quick getaway from the city and find a hiking trail to explore. It’s a relaxing, even meditative experience that will keep you connected to Mother Nature. Hiking trails vary in difficulty, so it all depends on how laidback you want your outing to be. The scenery can also change – from the lushes green woods to a desert canyon, wherever your mood dictates, your feet will take you.

Free Outdoor Concert

Summer is a time for music! Many cities have cool free events and local festivals during summertime and if you keep track of things happening in your neck of the woods, you’ll be surprised what you can find. Free concerts are not only a fantastic way to hang out with friends without spending a dime, they are also a great way to discover new artists and learn about new music styles.
