6 Ways to Ace your Next Interview

Fact: first impressions matter.

Whether you’re climbing the career ladder, or you own a business and are trying to woo a potential client, that first business interview is always the most important. Want to stand out for all the right reasons? Here’s our compilation of 6 top tips from Banc De Binary’s business managers.

1) Dress for success

Yes, this is essential. No, it’s not materialistic. How you look speaks volumes about your professional attitude. You don’t necessarily have to wear a suit and tie, but you should check what the appropriate attire is for the country and industry you’re in. When in doubt, dress up rather than down.

2) Mind your body language

A trillion studies have proven the significance of body language in communication. In fact, it’s more important than the words you say. Even if you’re not feeling confident, you need to act as though you are. When you first meet, stand up tall, smile, and say a big hello. As conversation progresses, don’t fidget. Make eye contact. Sit upright. Nod as they pose a question or talk about their company.

3) Build a relationship

People like to work with people whom they like. It’s just as important as your professional capabilities. In a job interview, a little bit of friendly small talk at the start can make you seem personable. If it’s a client or business partner that you hope to do repeat business with, then try to connect about family or interests, and if they are open with you, follow up at the next meeting.

4) Sing your own praises…

Always remember to focus positively on your strengths and what you can offer. Don’t worry that you lack experience: say that you’re willing to learn and work hard. Don’t explain why a past project failed: talk about what you gained from the experience. Don’t say that you are leaving your old job because you hate your boss: speak about the positive environment and new challenge that you are looking for.

5) …but be honest

If you have to admit weaknesses, keep it short and spin it positively. It’s ok, nobody’s perfect. Whatever you do, just don’t be too arrogant and lie about your abilities! If you pretend to speak German or to know how to program an app or run an international PR campaign, you could soon be B-U-S-T-E-D. That’s way more embarrassing than telling the truth.

6) Homework helps

You’d be amazed how many top candidates forget to research the company or person they are about to meet. Just 10 minutes on their website and LinkedIn page will make you look intelligent and professional, and it’s really easy to do. You’ll earn major bonus points if you throw in a compliment, such as that you love the product, or if you can make a suggestion for what you could contribute and how you can help them improve.
