Celebrities have been doing endorsement since the beginning of time, but in recent years, a growing number of stars have become more interested in having their own business ventures.
While Hollywood continues to place emphasis on women’s beauty and appearance, some of our favorite female celebs are making a name for themselves as savvy business moguls, proving that girl power is alive and kicking.
Jessica Alba
We’ve loved Jessica Alba since her “Dark Angel” days but while she’s maintained a “working actress” status for years now, there’s no denying her real success is in the business world. In 2011 Alba co-founded of The Honest Company, which sells non-toxic body care products, diapers and other household products. This ethical consumerism is no joke. In 2014 revenues were projected to hit $150 million; it made $122 million in funding plus a $70 million round in August of that year. As of August 2015 the company is valued at $1.7 billion.
Nicole Richie
She might have started off as Paris Hilton’s BFF and sidekick but Nicole Richie proved sceptics wrong when she spread her wings after “The Simple Life” went off the air and made it on her own. In 2008 she launched jewelry line House of Harlow 1960, which grew into a major brand. A maternity line, a handbag collection and a fragrance soon followed. In 2010, she even won “Entrepreneur of the Year” for at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards.
Jessica Simpson
Simpson started off as a singer but found it hard to make it big like her contemporaries Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. She became a pop-culture household name with the reality show “Newlyweds” but she only became a successful mogul when she started focusing on her fashion business. The Jessica Simpson Collection – launched in 2006 – was sold to Sequential Brands in 2015 for an unnamed amount, a purchase that gave Sequential’s stock a 12 percent boost. Considering the fact that her highly successful collection generates yearly sales of approximately $1 billion, it’s safe to say Simpson won’t need to release another album any time soon.
Blake Lively
Fresh of her Gossip Girl fame, Lively became a wife, a mother and an entrepreneur. June 2014 saw the launch of her e-commerce business, Preserve, which is digital magazine and a video blog. The venture is philanthropy driven and collaborates with organizations like Covenant House, for example, to donate a percentage of sales to help provide homeless children with food, clothing, and shelter. Unlike Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop (that has been highly criticizes for its outrageous pricing), Preserve, offers products that are quite affordable.
Sophia Vergara
Vergara is somewhat of an unlikely Hollywood starlet. After starting off as a TV presenter and model in her native Colombia, the fast-talking Latin bombshell moved to the US and worked consistently for years without becoming much more that a fixture in men’s magazines. She hit it big in 2009 with a role on the acclaimed show “Modern Family” and her star has been on the rise ever since. At 43-year-old, Vergara is one of the highest-paid women working in television, has a 12-year deal with Kmart (where she designs collections of cloths and accessories) and is also the co-founder of the multi-million dollar talent management and entertainment marketing firm Latin World Entertainment; they recently teamed up with CNET to launch a Spanish-language news website. Forbes has reported that she made $37 million between June 2013 and June 2014, and 2015 (so far) has seen her earn $28.5 million.
