Saudis Say: If Iran Gets Bomb, We Want One Too

As the world powers debate the terms of a nuclear deal with Iran, Middle Eastern leaders are also making their voices heard.

Saudi Arabia’s former Head of Intelligence, Prince Turki al-Faisal, commented this week: “I’ve always said that whatever comes out of these talks, we will want the same.” Prince Turki, who also served in the past as Riyadh’s ambassador to London and Washington, does not currently hold an official position in the Saudi government. Nonetheless, analysts are agreed that his comments generally reflect the opinions of the ruling family.

Political analyst, Mark Langfan, says: “When President Obama retreated from Iraq, he essentially handed over all of Iraq’s Oil resources to Iran. Iraq has practically now become a province of Iran. After acquiring another third of the Persian Gulf’s Oil, Iran now also covets the Oil of the Saudis.”

According to Prince Turki, the Saudis are not the only ones afraid of the repercussions of a Nuclear Iran. “If Iran has the ability to enrich uranium to whatever level,” said Turki, “it’s not just Saudi Arabia that’s going to ask for that. The whole world will be an open door to go that route without any inhibition, and that’s my main objection to this P5+1 process.”

The Persian Gulf countries currently hold 35% of the world’s Natural Gas reserves, and almost two-thirds of the world’s Crude Oil. However these negotiations play out, there sure is a lot at stake.
