Keep The Change, Paul!

The Noble-prize winning New York Times columnist has embraced the loony sounding idea of the Trillion Dollar Platinum Coin option to avoid the debt ceiling.

One of the most satisfying moments in the whole coin saga was Jon Stewart’s skit in which he mocked Krugman for the whacky idea. Krugman’s reaction to Stewart’s lambasting of the platinum coin was equally funny. Both clips can be viewed on The Daily Show’s website.

Alhambra Investment Partners blog explains that “The Platinum Coin option exists due to a loophole in legislation passed years ago that gives the Treasury Department the authority to mint commemorative platinum coins. All you really need to know is that the platinum coin option is the equivalent of paying the nation’s bills with Monopoly money.”

In other words, Krugman is wrong and should be asked by serious economists to keep his change.
