Can Apple Compete With Tesla?

tes

Word on the street is that Apple (and Google) are seeking to enter the electric vehicle market, and many are saying that for Tesla, this could mean trouble. The story first began a couple of weeks ago, when an Apple employee was attending a party in Silicon Valley, and had a little too much to drink. The tipsy employee let it slip that Apple was working on developing an electric car, codenamed “Titan.”

Several days ago, Bloomberg reported rumors that Apple’s electric vehicle will hit the markets in 2020, and that hundreds of employees are already hard at work on the venture. But do the rumors have any basis in reality? And, if Apple really is developing an electric car, will it have what it takes to compete with Tesla?

Here are some facts and numbers you should take into consideration when analyzing the situation.

a) Apple hasn’t announced anything official yet.

While it is incredibly fishy that Apple is on a hiring spree of experts of the automotive industry, the lack of any official statement from Apple should be taken into consideration here. That being said, Apple has explicitly stated that it would be interested in developing smarter software for vehicles, especially software and hardware which grants easier iPhone integration.

b) Tesla has more experience in car manufacturing.

Tesla was established in 2003. That means it has a least a 10-year head start on Apple in car-building experience. Sure, Apple has been around since 1976. But developing Personal Computers, Smartphones, and Tablets is a little bit different than designing and developing a car. Apple does not currently have any automotive assembly lines set up, and analysts suspect that such a feet would take Apple at least 5 years if it’s just getting started now.

c) Apple’s fans are fanatical.

Apple has a super-loyal customer base, and should an electric vehicle be offered, the demand is probably already there. More often than not, when a customer chooses to buy an Apple product, it’s not out of necessity. It’s a religious experience.

d) Tesla is progressing rapidly.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Tesla is standing still, waiting for Apple to steal its market share. The company already employs around 10,000 employees, all dedicated to their global mission of making electric vehicles affordable and practical for the common man. Meanwhile, Tesla enthusiasts have been cheering the rapid progress of a plant in Nevada which will manufacture Tesla’s Model 3 electric sedan.
